'Delta Variant Spread' Moscow Records Highest Daily Death Toll of 144
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] In Moscow, the capital of Russia where the India-origin Delta variant is spreading, 144 deaths due to COVID-19 were reported in a single day.
According to AFP on the 27th (local time), the number of COVID-19 deaths in Moscow over the past 24 hours reached a record high of 144. The previous record was 98 on the 25th.
Across Russia, the number of new confirmed cases on that day was 20,538, and the number of deaths was 599.
In Moscow, the India-origin Delta variant, which is over 60% more contagious than the UK-origin Alpha variant, is spreading.

Sergey Sobyanin, the mayor of Moscow, announced on the 18th that "89.3% of confirmed cases in Moscow were infected with the India-origin variant called Delta." On the 26th, Mayor Sobyanin expressed concern, saying, "About 2,000 people are infected with COVID-19 and hospitalized every day. We have mobilized 20,000 hospital beds, but 14,000 are already occupied."
