The newly formed consortium, tentatively named the "Global R&D Network for Eco-friendly Smart Ship Hydrodynamics Technology," was established to jointly research advanced and core technologies related to the shipbuilding and marine industry, including environmental regulations, autonomous navigation, and hydrodynamics. The consortium is led by DSME.
Participating universities include MIT (USA), Seoul National University (Korea), University of Michigan (USA), and University of Strathclyde (UK). Classification societies involved are ABS (USA), LR (UK), BV (France), KR (Korea), and DNV (Norway). Research institutions include SINTEF Ocean (Norway), SSPA (Sweden), CNR (Italy), the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering, and HSVA (Hamburg Ship Model Basin, Germany), among a total of 15 global institutions.
The consortium plans to hold regular seminars, share the latest research trends, and collaborate on joint research projects. It will also participate in public research projects and jointly respond to international regulations. Exchange of research personnel and joint academic activities are also scheduled. The company explained that the consortium was formed due to the rapidly increasing need for new technology development amid the recovery trend in the shipbuilding and marine industry and growing demand for eco-friendly advanced ships.
