[ESG Management Era] Doosan Group Focuses on Eco-Friendly Business of Key Affiliates
[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] Doosan Group has established a separate ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) Committee alongside its board of directors to ensure management transparency, expand eco-friendly businesses across its affiliates, and realize ESG management. The ESG Committee is chaired directly by the CEO, with executives responsible for human rights and labor, environment, customer and product management, fair operations, and social contribution participating as members.
In addition, key affiliates such as Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction and Doosan Bobcat are actively expanding their eco-friendly businesses and continuing efforts to reduce environmental impact. Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction has set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2030 compared to BAU (the amount of greenhouse gases expected to be emitted under business-as-usual operations). Through the establishment of an integrated energy system utilizing big data, an annual reduction of 2.3 billion KRW in energy costs and 8,500 tons of greenhouse gas emissions is expected.
Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction is also accelerating the development and commercialization of eco-friendly power plant equipment. In 2019, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, together with the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials, developed a high-efficiency wet dust remover (EME) that simultaneously removes white smoke and fine dust emitted from thermal power plant chimneys. By using EME, fine dust and ultrafine dust generated from thermal power plants can be reduced to below 0.5 mg/N㎥.
Doosan Bobcat practices environmental management throughout the entire process of product development and production. Recyclable plastics are used in Doosan Bobcat’s loaders and excavators, and the headliners of loader cabins are made from plant-based eco-friendly materials. Going forward, Doosan Bobcat plans to focus on expanding development of electric vehicles such as electric excavators.
