Comprehensive Diagnosis of Workplace Bullying and Organizational Culture
Joint 'Special Labor Inspection Team' Formed by Central Regional Labor Office and Seongnam Branch to Start from the 9th
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] The government announced on the 8th that it will conduct a special labor inspection on Naver (NAVER), which caused social controversy after an employee made an extreme choice due to workplace harassment at the end of last month.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor released a press reference material in the afternoon and announced that it will conduct a special labor inspection on Naver. The ministry explained, "In accordance with the principle of conducting special inspections without exception on workplaces that cause social controversy by abusing superior positions to mistreat workers, we are proceeding with the inspection."
The ministry stated that since Naver is a representative system software development company in Korea, it plans to conduct the special inspection strictly. It judged that this is a golden opportunity to improve the practices spread throughout the information and communication (IT) industry based on the results of the inspection on Naver.
Specifically, from the 9th, a 'special labor inspection team' composed of labor inspectors from the Central Regional Employment and Labor Office and the Seongnam Branch Office will be formed to begin the inspection. The special inspection will conduct an in-depth review of labor-related laws including the Labor Standards Act. It plans to specifically investigate whether workplace harassment occurred in relation to the employee death incident. It will check whether workplace harassment was routinely carried out not only against the employee who made the extreme choice but also other workers. The overall organizational culture will be diagnosed together.
Additionally, during the special inspection process, it will also check whether Naver violated working and break time regulations. In particular, the investigation results on workplace harassment and the diagnosis of organizational culture will be disclosed so that all workers can see them, and follow-up measures will be taken to improve unfair treatment of workers and unreasonable organizational culture based on the investigation results.
