Providing Quality Educational Content to Vulnerable Elementary, Middle, and High School Students and Out-of-School Youth to Close Academic Gaps
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] On the 8th, Seoul City announced that it will introduce a next-generation edu-tech (edu+tech) method that combines cutting-edge ICT technologies such as big data and artificial intelligence (AI), establishing a platform at the public level and providing high-quality educational content.
Seoul City aims to bridge the educational gap between regions and respond to the deepening academic disparity caused by the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic through the 'Online Education Support Platform.' This is one of Mayor Oh Se-hoon's key pledges to build a fair educational foundation.
Seoul City plans to prioritize services for vulnerable children and adolescents. The platform will target all grades from elementary to high school students, as well as students in alternative education institutions and out-of-school youth. It will then expand to lifelong education, serving as an educational platform for citizens concerned about job shifts caused by the Fourth Industrial Revolution and digital transformation. It will also be used for vocational education to nurture talent in emerging industries with growing demand, such as AI and robotics.
Seoul City will also establish and operate the 'Seoul Innovation and Fair Education Committee' to actively formulate future education support policies. The committee is a public-private collaboration structure. It will discuss current challenges in society and education and review policy implementation plans through cooperation between administration and the private sector. The committee consists of 17 members: 15 field experts closely connected to education and industry, and 2 ex officio senior officials from Seoul City in related fields.
Accordingly, Mayor Oh Se-hoon held the inauguration ceremony of the Seoul Innovation and Fair Education Committee at Seoul City Hall meeting room on the morning of the same day and presented appointment letters to the advisory group. The committee will then hold its first regular meeting and begin full-scale activities. At the first regular meeting, one private member will be elected as the chairperson. Reports on the ‘Seoul Innovation, Fair Education Committee Operation Plan’ and a presentation on the ‘Seoul Future Education Vision (tentative name)’ will also be conducted.
Under the vision of ‘An Innovative and Fair Education City Leading the Future,’ the committee will hold full meetings at least once a month and conduct in-depth discussions by subcommittees over the next six months to derive key tasks. The key tasks will be divided into three areas to focus on urgent challenges: ‘Innovative Education’ to eliminate educational gaps, ‘Fairness and Diversity Education’ to improve educational polarization and blind spots, and ‘Lifelong Vocational Education’ to foster creative talents linked to careers.
Each subcommittee will include Seoul’s specialized research institutions such as the Seoul Institute, Seoul Lifelong Education Promotion Institute, and Seoul Business Agency to support agenda discovery and planning.
