View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Jiwon] The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Korea Expressway Corporation announced on the 3rd that they will gradually establish multi-lane Hi-Pass systems at 34 expressway toll plazas nationwide by the end of the year.
The multi-lane Hi-Pass removes lane separation facilities to allow 2 to 4 Hi-Pass lanes to be used as a single lane, securing lane widths equal to those on the main expressway. Up to last year, 32 locations had been established.
Compared to single-lane Hi-Pass, multi-lane Hi-Pass allows vehicles to pass through toll plazas at higher speeds, increasing the throughput per lane by up to 64% (from 1,100 vehicles per hour to 1,800 vehicles per hour).
Additionally, with wider lane widths and fewer lane facilities, drivers can pass through more comfortably and safely. Since the introduction of multi-lane Hi-Pass in 2018, traffic accidents have decreased by 18%.
By next month, multi-lane Hi-Pass will be gradually opened at 10 locations including Giheung-Dongtan, Gunpo, Maesong, Cheongbuk, and Pohang, and by the end of the year, at 24 toll plazas including Chuncheon, Ansan, Songtan, and Pyeongtaek.
For locations where establishing multi-lane Hi-Pass is difficult, the lane width of single-lane Hi-Pass will be expanded from 3.0m to 3.6m to ensure drivers can pass safely.
Up to last year, 47 Hi-Pass lanes were expanded, and this year, an additional 35 lanes will be expanded, improving the traffic conditions of a total of 82 single-lane Hi-Pass lanes by the end of the year.
