Haorin Ha, a second-year PhD student in the Department of Statistics at Pukyong National University and an international student from China, recently won the Grand Prize for oral presentation papers at the graduate student paper presentation contest held at Yeungnam Institute of Science and Technology during the 2021 Spring Academic Conference of the Korea Data Information Science Society.
Haorin Ha received the highest evaluation among participants with the paper titled "Deep Learning-based Survival Analysis for High-dimensional Time-to-Event Data" (Advisor: Ha Il-do).
This paper evaluated the predictive performance of the survival prediction model "DNNSurv" using big data on cancer patients' survival and compared it with existing machine learning survival prediction models.
He presented the optimal settings for several hyperparameters and, through data analysis, demonstrated that the "DNNSurv" model generally outperforms other machine learning survival prediction models in predictive performance.
Juncheol Kim, a second-year master's student in the same department, received the Excellence Award for poster presentation with the paper "Penalized Variable Selection for Semi-parametric Mixture Cure Models" (Advisor: Ha Il-do).
In this paper, Kim proposed and was recognized for a unified penalized variable selection procedure that simultaneously identifies variables significantly affecting both cure rate and survival rate based on the semi-parametric mixture cure model.
Notably, the method he proposed provides a useful analytical framework for analyzing COVID-19 data.
