Israel Requests $1 Billion Military Aid from the US
$3.8 Billion Support Commitment Under 2016 Bilateral Agreement
[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] Israel has requested emergency military aid amounting to 1 billion USD (approximately 1.1 trillion KRW) from the United States to recover losses sustained in the recent armed conflict with the Palestinian militant group Hamas, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham revealed.
On the 1st (local time), the U.S. political media Axios reported that Senator Graham stated this during a recent interview on Fox News' 'Fox & Friends,' adding, "I will work to secure the budget support."
According to Israeli military officials, Benny Gantz, Israel's Minister of Defense, is scheduled to visit Washington DC on the 3rd to meet with U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan to hold talks and discuss related matters.
Israel has stated that U.S. support is needed to restore the air defense system 'Iron Dome' to its original state and to purchase weapons necessary for the air force, such as precision-guided missiles. The price of one Iron Dome air defense missile battery is known to be 60 billion KRW, and one Tamir interceptor missile costs over 50 million KRW.
Senator Graham met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Minister Gantz the day before, and the Israeli military authorities also confirmed the support request.
This emergency military aid request is based on an agreement between the two countries made in 2016, under which the U.S. agreed to provide 3.8 billion USD in funding to Israel upon emergency requests until 2026.
