Gwangju City 'Urban Agriculture Revitalization Support Project' 2nd Public Contest
Applications accepted until 6 PM on the 14th... 15 organizations selected, up to 3 million KRW support
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Gwangju Metropolitan City is launching the second round of the ‘2021 Urban Agriculture Activation Support Project’ focusing on citizen communities.
According to Gwangju City on the 1st, this project was prepared to utilize the multifunctional value of agriculture to solve urban environmental problems and to alleviate depression, community breakdown, and economic difficulties caused by COVID-19.
The second round of the contest will proceed with a total of five projects. Among them, ▲Urban Garden Support Project and ▲Weekend Farm Support Project are only open to ‘Urban Agriculture Communities’ registered under Article 13 of the ‘Act on the Promotion and Support of Urban Agriculture.’
Gwangju City plans to select a total of 15 organizations and support each organization with 1.5 million to 3 million KRW.
Three projects including the Urban Agriculture Specialized Village (Alley) Creation Project, Urban Farmer Harmony Garden Support Project, and Welfare-type Shared Meal Garden Support Project can only be applied for by non-profit private organizations, village communities, apartment residents’ representative meetings, and social welfare facilities.
They plan to select 21 organizations and support each with 2 million to 5 million KRW.
However, if the number of applications exceeds or falls short for each support project as a result of the contest, the project volume and budget will be adjusted so that the majority of organizations participating in the contest can receive subsidies.
In particular, the urban agriculture activation project must include ‘urban-rural exchange events’ and ‘urban agriculture education.’
This is a plan to break the existing framework of urban agriculture as simple garden cultivation and to create opportunities for urban agriculture participants to understand the importance of agriculture, consideration for farmers, solving environmental problems through agriculture, and practicing for the realization of a carbon-neutral city by 2045.
Organizations wishing to participate in the project can refer to the ‘2021 Urban Agriculture Activation Support Project Plan Announcement’ posted on the Gwangju City website’s notices/announcements section and submit the project plan by visiting the Life Agriculture Division’s Urban Agriculture Team or by email by 6 p.m. on the 14th.

Meanwhile, to expand urban agriculture participants, Gwangju City is promoting that people who have vacant land or rooftops of 100㎡ or more, or farmland for weekend farms, gather five or more households and register as an ‘Urban Agriculture Community’ with the relevant autonomous district office. In the first round of this year’s contest, 22 organizations including urban agriculture communities and village communities were selected and supported.
