Uljin-gun Holds Public Hearing on Wangpicheon and Bulyoung Valley National Park Designation... "An Alternative to Government's Nuclear Phase-Out Policy"
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-ho] Uljin County (Governor Jeon Chan-geol) is accelerating the preliminary procedures for the designation of Wangpicheon and Bulyoung Valley as a national park.
According to Uljin County on the 1st, a final report meeting and residents' public hearing for the "Feasibility Study and Promotion Plan Establishment Research Project for the Designation of Wangpicheon and Bulyoung Valley as a National Park" was held on May 28 at the Wangpicheon Culture Center in Wangpicheon Park.
Uljin County has been carrying out projects to acquire the national park brand for systematic and integrated management of the Wangpicheon Ecological Landscape Conservation Area (84,243㎢, designated in October 2005) and Bulyoung Valley County Park (25,595㎢, designated in October 1983).
Before the public hearing, a survey on local residents' awareness conducted by the Korea Environment Institute showed that 44.8% of residents in the target area supported the new designation of the national park. Those who were unsure accounted for 29.3%, and those opposed were 25.9%. Among all Uljin residents, support was 84.3%, and opposition was 15.7%.
The public hearing included expert panel discussions with participants such as Professor Choi Jae-yong of Chungnam National University, Dr. Park Yong-ha of KEI, Deputy Director Nam Tae-han of the Korea National Park Service, and Dr. Kim Jeong-hoon of Gyeongbuk Provincial Office.

Jeon Chan-geol, Governor of Uljin County, emphasized, "The primary reason for promoting the designation as a national park is the need for a new alternative to overcome the crisis in the local economy caused by the government's nuclear phase-out policy," adding, "With the designation as a national park, we expect to revitalize local tourism and develop the local economy through enhanced brand value."
