To prevent the spread of COVID-19, only about 20 people, including the co-representatives of the Geochang Headquarters and other executives and citizens, attended the general meeting. Following the launch of the Basic Income National Movement Headquarters last December, Geochang became the third branch established in Gyeongnam. Sancheong, Hadong, Changwon, and Yangsan are scheduled to launch in June.
Jung Yeon-tak and Assemblyman An Ui-han were elected as the permanent representatives of the Geochang Headquarters. As co-representatives, Kwon Soon-mo, a member of the Geochang County Council from the Democratic Party of Korea, and Choi Eun-jin were respectively elected.
Permanent Representative Jung Yeon-tak said, “In a capitalist society, all wealth inevitably accumulates with conglomerates, creating a vicious cycle,” and added, “I hope many people will participate in basic income to solve this problem.”
Gyeongnam Provincial Assembly member Song Soon-ho said, “Polarization, one of the challenges humanity must solve, is widening due to the nature of capitalism,” and stated, “With a future where employment is disappearing approaching, I hope a basic income policy is introduced so that our citizens can enjoy at least a minimum humane life.”
In the invited lecture following the inaugural general meeting, Permanent Representative Kim Se-jun said, “South Korea already declared in 2019 that it would move beyond being an IT powerhouse to become an AI powerhouse,” and added, “This is a trend of the times, and if basic income is not provided in the future, a disastrous situation could occur.”

He continued, “There are many evaluations that the universal disaster relief fund we received last year helped revive the economy,” and explained, “Although there are concerns about the huge tax burden, the scale of basic income can be adjusted to start at a level that does not cause a burden, and it can also be funded through carbon taxes like in Switzerland or through land taxes owned by economic agents.”
