60s Sentenced to Prison for Stabbing Acquaintance with a Knife During Hwatu Game, Saying "I Won Money by Cheating"
[Asia Economy Reporter Seoyoung Kwon] A man in his 60s who wielded a weapon after an argument while playing Hwatu with an acquaintance was sentenced to five years in prison.
Today (the 30th), the Criminal Division 1 of the Pohang Branch of Daegu District Court (Chief Judge Sunhyang Kwon) announced that A (61), who was indicted on charges of attempted murder, was sentenced to five years in prison. Additionally, he was ordered to wear an electronic location tracking device for 10 years.
It is known that on January 24th at around 11 a.m., A was playing Hwatu with his acquaintance B (57), whom he had known for five years, at a convenience store in Buk-gu, Pohang. While drinking and playing Hwatu, A became enraged and argued with B after B took the betting money, accusing him of "cheating to win money."
In response, A stabbed B’s face and arms with a weapon, causing severe injuries. When the store owner confiscated the weapon and tried to stop him, A fled the scene and was later arrested at his younger brother’s house. He was subsequently brought to trial on charges of attempted murder.

The court stated regarding A’s crime, "The weapon used and the method of the crime were very bold and dangerous." It continued, "Considering the severity of the victim’s injuries and the living environment, there is a risk of reoffending. Moreover, A fled immediately after the crime and showed an attitude of shifting some responsibility during the investigation process, making severe punishment inevitable."
