Police Officer Intoxicated, Assaults Taxi Driver; Officer from National Police Agency Booked
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] An intelligence officer affiliated with the National Police Agency was booked by the police for assaulting a taxi driver while driving under the influence of alcohol.
On the 30th, according to the police, the Seongdong Police Station in Seoul booked Inspector A, affiliated with the Public Safety Intelligence Bureau of the National Police Agency, on charges of assaulting a driver under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes and is currently investigating.
Inspector A is known to have assaulted the taxi driver after an argument while intoxicated.
Article 5 of the current Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes stipulates that anyone who assaults or threatens a driver of a vehicle in operation shall be punished by imprisonment for up to five years or a fine of up to 20 million won. Controversy arose last year when the police did not apply this charge during the investigation of the assault case involving taxi drivers by Lee Yong-gu, then Deputy Minister of Justice and a lawyer.
