Naver Unveils '2040 Carbon Negative' Implementation Roadmap
[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] Naver unveiled a concrete execution roadmap on the 28th to achieve ‘2040 Carbon Negative.’ The plan is to gradually expand the adoption of renewable energy and achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.
The announced roadmap focuses on converting more than 99% of the company’s greenhouse gas emissions from electricity usage to 100% renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, solar thermal, and geothermal. According to the roadmap, by 2030, 60% of the electricity used in IDC and office buildings will be replaced with renewable energy, and through continuous expansion, 100% renewable energy conversion will be achieved by 2040.
The headquarters building, Green Factory, and the IDC ‘Gak Chuncheon’ located in Chuncheon will improve power generation facilities such as solar power to be more efficient and restructure to reduce energy consumption. The second office building, scheduled for completion this year, will expand the use of geothermal and solar energy, and the second IDC ‘Gak Sejong,’ expected to be completed in 2023, will introduce an eco-friendly outdoor air cooling system, reducing greenhouse gases through efficient energy management and operation.
They have also set a plan to achieve ‘Carbon Negative’ ten years ahead of the national 2050 carbon neutrality promotion strategy through decarbonization technology and power plant investments.
Additionally, considering domestic renewable energy development and self-generation conditions, Naver plans to actively expand PPA (third-party power purchase agreements) that combine indirect development and investment.
