Hyundai Motor Company Launches 2021 Model Year Xcient Hydrogen Electric Truck "Expanding Exports"
[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Hyundai Motor Company launched the 2021 model XCIENT Fuel Cell hydrogen electric truck on the 25th.
The XCIENT Fuel Cell hydrogen electric truck is a large hydrogen electric truck that Hyundai Motor Company mass-produced for the first time in the world last year. Since July last year, a total of 46 units have been exported to Switzerland.
The company explained that the XCIENT Fuel Cell hydrogen electric truck, which emits no carbon dioxide while driving, has reduced more than approximately 585 tons of carbon dioxide across Switzerland over the past 10 months, assuming that a diesel truck of the same class emits 0.78 kg of carbon dioxide per kilometer.
Jang Jae-hoon, President of Hyundai Motor Company, said, “The XCIENT Fuel Cell hydrogen electric truck is the result of Hyundai’s accumulated technological know-how in the hydrogen fuel cell field for over 20 years,” adding, “Hyundai is advancing the vision toward an eco-friendly hydrogen society together with overseas customers of hydrogen electric trucks.”
The 2021 model features a new grille applied to the existing XCIENT Fuel Cell hydrogen electric truck and an additional chassis lineup. The front part creates an eco-friendly and robust image with a radiator grille featuring a straight and thick V-shaped chrome decoration and a three-dimensional mesh pattern.
An airbag for the driver’s seat is applied as standard, and the steering control system (MAHS) is offered as an optional feature to enhance product appeal. Reflecting local opinions in Switzerland, a 6x2 chassis was added alongside the existing 4x2 chassis in operation, expanding customer choices.
A total of 140 units of this model are scheduled to be shipped to Switzerland by the end of this year. Hyundai plans to supply a total of 1,600 hydrogen electric trucks to Switzerland, including the units already delivered, by 2025, and is actively discussing entry into other European countries.
In North America, consultations are underway with regional governments such as California and private logistics projects, and an opportunity for general customers to directly experience the XCIENT Fuel Cell hydrogen electric truck is planned within this year.

Mark Freymueller, CEO of Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility (HHM), said, “Local customers in Switzerland are very satisfied with the quality, ride comfort, and driving convenience of the XCIENT Fuel Cell hydrogen electric truck,” adding, “There is continuous interest from other European countries as well, so we expect to see XCIENT Fuel Cell hydrogen electric trucks across Europe in the future.”
