UN Approves Extension of North Korea Sanctions Exemption for Swiss India Support Organization
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Yuri] The United Nations (UN) has approved the extension of the North Korea sanctions exemption requested by a Swiss aid organization to support quarantine supplies.
On the 22nd, the UN Security Council's North Korea Sanctions Committee announced on its website that it will extend the sanctions exemption period for the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), under the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs, until November 17.
The SDC received the exemption approval at the end of March last year, but since North Korea closed its borders due to COVID-19 and was unable to bring in aid supplies before the exemption period expired, it applied for an extension.
The organization plans to provide 30 sets of disinfection kits and 2,000 sets of personal protective equipment (PPE) including masks, goggles, and gloves to 30 hospitals in North Korea, including the Ryokpho District Hospital in Pyongyang. These supplies are valued at approximately 90,000 Swiss francs (about 113 million KRW).
