[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Lee Sang-hyun] The premium rice brand "Gayatteul" from Gimhae City, Gyeongnam, has been exported to the United Arab Emirates for the first time.
According to the city on the 20th, Jinyeong Nonghyup recently exported 1.8 tons of Gayatteul to the United Arab Emirates.
Gayatteul was recognized for its excellence, having been used at the welcome banquet of the Korea-ASEAN Special Summit attended by leaders of the 10 ASEAN countries in 2019.
In the past, Korea's rice export market was mainly formed targeting Korean expatriates in the United States and Australia, but since local production is possible in the US and Australia, it struggled to compete with local rice varieties such as Calrose and Sunrice.
However, the newly developed United Arab Emirates has 97% of its land covered by desert, making rice production difficult, has a very high foreign population ratio of 90%, and a high income level (per capita GDP of $38,000), making it an optimal export region for premium rice like Gayatteul.
