President Moon's US Visit Emphasizes 'Practicality'... Reduced Delegation, Amplified Political Status
Official 3-Night 5-Day Working Visit to the U.S.... Focus on Korean Companies' Investment Announcements Ahead of June 21 Korea-U.S. Summit
[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] President Moon Jae-in's fourth visit to the United States emphasizes 'practicality' over formality. Large-scale political events involving many participants, such as meetings with the Korean-American community, were not arranged separately, and the focus is on working-level schedules like the Korea-US summit.
This visit is a 3-night, 5-day 'Official Working Visit' at the invitation of US President Joe Biden. Although the format is not significantly different from previous visits by President Moon to the US, the delegation has been drastically reduced.
The official presidential entourage has been cut to about half compared to usual visits to the US. First Lady Kim Jung-sook, who accompanied the president on previous US trips, is not accompanying him this time. Although the size of the delegation has decreased, the political significance is said to have increased, according to consensus inside and outside the Blue House.
In particular, the summit held at the White House on the afternoon of the 21st (local time) is the highlight that will determine the success of the visit. It is necessary to redesign the blueprint for the Korean Peninsula based on the North Korea policy prepared by the US government, and there are pressing issues directly related to national interests, including cooperation on COVID-19 vaccines and semiconductor and automobile battery cooperation plans.
The Blue House managed expectations by adjusting the level of anticipation when forecasts of achievements regarding COVID-19 vaccine cooperation emerged. Blue House spokesperson Park Kyung-mi said, "Discussions on vaccine cooperation are ongoing, but nothing has been decided." While the Blue House expects outcomes beneficial to national interests, it is cautious about rising expectations before any agreement is announced.
However, it is noteworthy that both the Blue House and the White House are making efforts to reach an agreement by continuing working-level consultations until the last moment. It is also significant that a bipartisan resolution welcoming President Moon's visit to the US was introduced in the House of Representatives following the Senate.
There is talk in the US of expecting a 'win-win negotiation' that enhances the national interests of both countries. Additionally, as large-scale investment and technology cooperation plans from major companies such as Samsung and SK are expected to be announced in line with the summit, the atmosphere locally is also intensifying.
