Groundbreaking of 'Seoul Robot Artificial Intelligence Chemistry Hall' for 4th Industrial Technology Experience in Changdong and Sanggye, Seoul... Completion in 2023
On the 20th, Mayor Oh Se-hoon Attends Groundbreaking Ceremony at Construction Site
A Specialized Science Museum Where All Generations Experience the Latest 4th Industrial Revolution Technologies Including Robots, AI, Virtual and Augmented Reality
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government will open the 'Seoul Robot Artificial Intelligence Science Museum,' a hub for 4th Industrial Revolution technology education and experience, in the Changdong-Sanggye New Economic Center in 2023.
On the afternoon of the 20th, Seoul held a groundbreaking ceremony at the site near Changdong Station for the construction of the Seoul Robot Artificial Intelligence Science Museum and officially began the building process. The ceremony was attended by Mayor Oh Se-hoon, Dobong District Mayor Lee Dong-jin, local members of the National Assembly, city council members, and others. Robots participated in every part of the process. The Changdong-Sanggye New Economic Center in Seoul is a project to transform the northeastern area, a representative bedroom community of Seoul, into a place where startups, jobs, housing, culture, and commercial functions coexist.
The Seoul Robot Artificial Intelligence Science Museum is expected to serve as a specialized science museum and a core cultural facility acting as the forward base for the 4th Industrial Revolution in the northeastern region. It will lead the image of the Changdong-Sanggye New Economic Center and create a scientific and cultural network connecting nearby universities, research institutes, corporate researchers, and the general public, thereby revitalizing the area.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, robots developed by six domestic robotics companies participated in all processes, from venue disinfection to entrance guidance, event hosting, and groundbreaking, adding fun to the event. The six robotics companies participating in the ceremony are Uver, Smart Disinfection Robot, Goyoung Robotics Dance Robot, Torok Companion Robot, Robo3 Guide Robot, Exa Robotics Autonomous Guide Robot, and Doosan Robotics Collaborative Robot.
The Seoul Robot Artificial Intelligence Science Museum will be built within a 3-minute walk from Changdong Station, covering a total floor area of 7,405㎡ (from two basement floors to four above-ground floors). A total budget of 43.7 billion KRW will be invested.
Inside, an entire floor is dedicated to a planned exhibition hall capable of hosting various sizes of planned and special exhibitions. Through exhibitions and education, all generations will be able to experience the 4th Industrial Revolution. The museum plans to work closely with companies to provide experiences with the latest scientific technologies in fields such as robotics, AI, virtual and augmented reality, and holograms.
In particular, it will lead exhibition trends with differentiated planned exhibitions that attract the interest of the 2030 MZ generation. The science museum plans to collaborate with creators, startups, and others to become a gateway for new business creation and a playground for diverse exchanges. It will also operate advanced educational programs to explore new robotic technologies.
The creative architectural design and smart construction process of the Seoul Robot Artificial Intelligence Science Museum are expected to add significance to the project. The winning design of the international design competition, finalized in 2019, was created by the chief architect of Zaha Hadid Architects, who designed the DDP, showcasing a curved, non-regular design. To realize this, digital manufacturing technologies such as 3D scanning will be integrated, and construction will be carried out using the OSC (Off-Site Construction) method. Designer Melike Altinisik planned to apply smart technologies in construction to achieve not only an architecturally sculptural exterior but also a distinctive interior design without columns.
Mayor Oh Se-hoon said, “The future ahead of us can be completely different depending on how we prepare for and respond to the 4th Industrial Revolution. Seoul aims to make the 'Seoul Robot Artificial Intelligence Science Museum' a place where people can experience the 4th Industrial Revolution in daily life through education,” adding, “In connection with the Changdong-Sanggye New Economic Center development project, we will do our best to ensure that the 'Seoul Robot Artificial Intelligence Science Museum' becomes a landmark not only in northeastern Seoul but throughout South Korea.”
