US and Iran Clash in Hormuz Strait... US Claims "30 Warning Shots Fired"
Incident Occurs Amid Ongoing Discussions on Restoring Iran Nuclear Deal
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Suhwan] It has been revealed that a U.S. Coast Guard ship fired 30 warning shots during a confrontation with the Iranian Navy. With the restoration talks of the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA - Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) currently underway, there is growing interest in whether this confrontation will become a variable in the negotiations.
On the 10th (local time), the U.S. Pentagon stated, "Our Navy fired warning shots as 13 Iranian fast boats approached the U.S. Coast Guard ship in the Strait of Hormuz." According to a Pentagon spokesperson, the Iranian vessels approached six U.S. military ships, including the missile destroyer USS Monterey, which was escorting the missile nuclear submarine USS Georgia, up to 150 yards (approximately 137 meters).
The spokesperson said, "The Iranian side acted very aggressively," adding, "More Iranian vessels came than during last month's confrontation."
Previously, last month, three vessels belonging to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGCN) approached a U.S. Coast Guard ship patrolling the Gulf, prompting the U.S. side to fire warning shots.
This situation occurred while the United States, Iran, and other countries are conducting discussions on restoring the Iran nuclear deal in Vienna, Austria.
After former President Donald Trump announced the U.S. withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018, Iran also declared its intention to resume uranium enrichment, escalating tensions between the Western world and Iran over the nuclear issue.
