Naver and Seoul National University Launch Massive AI Joint Research with Hundreds of Billions Invested Over 3 Years
[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] Naver announced on the 10th that it has signed a business agreement with Seoul National University for joint research on hyperscale AI (artificial intelligence).
Naver and Seoul National University plan to establish the "SNU·NAVER Hyperscale AI Center" to conduct joint research and strengthen cooperation in research and education. About 100 AI researchers from both Naver and Seoul National University will participate, with investments amounting to several tens of billions of won over three years for research funding and infrastructure support.
The two institutions aim to further develop a hyperscale Korean language model and, ultimately, jointly develop hyperscale AI capable of simultaneously understanding language, images, and voice, leading global AI technology.
They also agreed to promote personnel exchanges. Naver researchers will serve as adjunct professors to jointly supervise Seoul National University graduate students to grow into AI experts, and Seoul National University researchers will actively participate in AI research with Naver. From the perspective of nurturing AI talent, Naver will also actively cooperate in internships and industry-academia cooperation dispatches for Seoul National University students.
Furthermore, to facilitate smooth research collaboration, Naver will share its supercomputing infrastructure and data for use at the joint research center. Last October, Naver became the first domestic company to introduce a supercomputer to build a hyperscale language model. The research outcomes will be actively shared, including holding technology-sharing workshops more than twice a year.
Naver COO Choi In-hyuk said, "Through the joint AI research center combining Naver’s infrastructure, data, and the research capabilities of both sides, we will lead research in the hyperscale AI field to compete with global rivals."
