[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Not only the government but also quasi-governmental organizations are actively promoting policies that allow special-type workers (teukgo), such as delivery workers, to enroll in employment and industrial accident insurance starting from July.

The Korea Workers' Compensation and Welfare Service announced on the 9th that it will operate an intensive promotion period for employment and industrial accident insurance enrollment for one month starting from the 10th. The scope of employment insurance enrollment has been expanded to include artists and teukgo who are not workers under the Labor Standards Act, providing unemployment benefits in case of job loss. Industrial accident insurance coverage has been extended to family workers, and the reasons for exemption from teukgo application have been limited so that workers injured on the job can receive industrial accident compensation.

Newly enrolling workplaces must submit an insurance relationship establishment report to the Service within 14 days after the first day of employing workers, artists, or teukgo. Workplaces already enrolled must submit a qualification acquisition (employment, entry) report to the Service by the 15th of the month following the month in which employment (labor provision) occurred.

The Service supports insurance premiums for employers, workers, and artists through the Durunuri social insurance premium support project. Through the Durunuri project, the government supports 80% of employment insurance premiums for newly enrolled workers and artists with an average monthly wage below 2.2 million KRW in workplaces with fewer than 10 employees, as well as their employers. Applications for employment and industrial accident insurance enrollment and Durunuri social insurance premium support can be made remotely via the employment and industrial accident insurance total service. Detailed information about enrollment and benefits can be confirmed through the Service’s call center.

Kang Soonhee, Director of the Service, said, "This year will be an important year for employment and industrial accident insurance to establish itself as a system encompassing all working people, including existing workers, artists, and teukgo. The Service will support more workers and teukgo to enroll in employment and industrial accident insurance and enjoy benefits through early settlement and stable implementation of the new system."
