Life Raft Found on Jeju Aewol Rocky Shore... Lost from Vessel
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters (Jeju) Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] A liferaft lost from a vessel operating near the rocky shore of Aewol-eup, Jeju City, was discovered.
According to the Jeju Coast Guard, at around 5:39 a.m. on the 3rd, a report was received that a black boat had drifted onto the rocky shore of Hagwi 2-ri, Aewol-eup, Jeju City. The patrol team from Hallim Police Substation was dispatched and upon inspection, the reported object was confirmed to be a liferaft used for escape during a shipwreck. There were no occupants, and only two unopened emergency rations were found.
The Jeju Coast Guard quickly dispatched a patrol vessel patrolling the nearby waters to the area where the liferaft was found to conduct a maritime search. Upon checking the equipment remaining on the liferaft at the scene, it was confirmed that the liferaft belonged to the Malaysian-flagged container ship A (12,800 tons) and had been lost.
At around 7:49 a.m. that day, the Coast Guard contacted the captain of ship A, who reported that the vessel was currently entering Xiamen Port, China, and it was estimated that the liferaft was lost while passing through the northern waters of Jeju between 8 and 9 p.m. on the 2nd.
