[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-ho] Pohang City announced on the 1st that it conducted an emergency safety inspection on the targeted buildings in relation to some media reports stating that the ground around buildings is sinking and the buildings are tilting due to ground subsidence in the Yangdeok-dong area.

The A one-room building in Yangdeok-dong, where ground subsidence occurred, was undergoing foundation reinforcement work by installing steel pipe piles due to the impact of the earthquake that occurred in November 2017. Nearby buildings such as B Restaurant and C Church were judged to be at risk of ground subsidence.
Pohang City explained that they plan to review the structural safety together with experts in related fields, such as structural engineers and the Pohang Regional Architects Association, while monitoring the progress of ground subsidence and other developments.
Cheon Byeong-ho, president of the Pohang Regional Architects Association, expressed the view that "It appears that the ground of roads and some buildings has subsided partially after the Pohang earthquake, and it would be reasonable to secure the structural safety of buildings after monitoring future changes and conditions."

Park Sang-gu, head of the Architectural Design Division, stated, "We will focus administrative efforts on preventing safety accidents and alleviating local residents' concerns by conducting frequent and intensive on-site inspections at locations where ground subsidence has occurred and building damage is feared."
