Biden Marks 100 Days in Office with Georgia Visit...Drive-In Rally Like During Campaign
"Special Debt to Georgia" Reflections
Visit to Former President Jimmy Carter's Residence
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] U.S. President Joe Biden, marking his 100th day in office, revisited Georgia, the key battleground state during the last U.S. presidential election, and met with supporters through a drive-in style rally similar to his campaign events. Having announced his economic reconstruction and tax increase plans in a congressional speech the day before, President Biden emphasized the necessity of the tax hike again during his visit to Georgia. It is also reported that President Biden visited the home of former President Jimmy Carter in Georgia.
According to foreign media including the Associated Press on the 29th (local time), President Biden visited Duluth, Georgia, on his 100th day in office and held a drive-in rally and gave a speech just like during the presidential campaign. President Biden expressed his gratitude repeatedly, saying, "I have wanted to visit Georgia since taking office. I owe a special debt to Georgia." Georgia was one of the key battleground states where a last-minute turnaround occurred during the November election, and Biden won there by a narrow margin of just 11,779 votes over former President Donald Trump.
Additionally, Georgia secured two Senate seats for the U.S. Democratic Party in January, which, combined with the Vice President's casting vote, made the Democrats the majority party, establishing Georgia as a core stronghold for President Biden and the Democratic Party.
In his speech that day, President Biden reiterated the tax increase plan announced in his joint congressional address. He said, "The middle class is already paying enough taxes," and added, "Now it is time for the wealthiest 1% of Americans and corporations to start doing their part." He continued, "I am not trying to punish anyone. It is not right that some large corporations that have made a lot of money have not paid a single cent in taxes," emphasizing, "Something is seriously wrong."
Before his speech in Duluth, President Biden visited the home of former President Jimmy Carter, who resides in Plains, Georgia. U.S. media highlighted the meeting between Biden, the oldest sitting president at 78, and Carter, the longest-living former president at 96.
