CJ Logistics Publishes Daily Life Report... Food and Indoor Furniture Deliveries Soar
[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, going out and dining out became difficult, leading to an increase in consumers receiving food via delivery. With heightened interest in health, more orders were placed for lifestyle and health products rather than fashion and clothing items. As time spent at home increased, the volume of home classroom supplies and pet-related products also rose.
According to CJ Logistics' "Daily Life Report 2020-2021," published on the 29th, the company delivered 1.6 billion parcels last year, which amounts to an average of 36 parcels per person annually based on the economically active population of 45.52 million. This volume, measured by standard parcel boxes (35 cm), could circle the Earth approximately 14 times.
With the normalization of non-face-to-face daily life, the total volume of food products increased by more than 50% compared to the previous year. The surge began in February to March 2020, when COVID-19 first spread, and the upward trend has continued.
The "agricultural product bundles," which support farmers whose sales channels were blocked due to social distancing and assist consumers who could not freely go out, increased by 6,789% last year. The "dawn delivery service," which delivers fresh food directly to consumers' doorsteps, also saw a sharp increase from February last year, growing by 181%.
Last year's parcel volume showed that with increased interest in health and hygiene due to COVID-19, "lifestyle and health" products ranked second in overall volume share, following "fashion and clothing."
The "lifestyle and health" product category also recorded the highest growth rate compared to 2019. Both "lifestyle and health" and "food" product groups increased by 50%, marking the highest growth rates. In contrast, with reduced outings, categories such as "fashion and clothing" and "cosmetics and beauty" saw smaller increases.
As remote work and online classes prolonged, parcel volumes for "chairs" and "ergonomic chairs" surged by 112% and 3,042%, respectively. Additionally, "printers," which experienced shortages for a time due to online classes, increased by 33%.
Pet-related products also showed overall growth, with snacks and food up 44%, supplements up 38%, and toys up 36%. Interest in pet fashion also rose, with human fashion clothing volume increasing by 19%, while pet clothing rose by 26%.
The recently released regular report analyzed five perspectives: logistics life, main living, cultural life, dietary life, and clothing life.
CJ Logistics introduced Korea's first logistics big data analysis report, the Daily Life Report, in May 2020, and publishes an annual report analyzing yearly cargo volumes. The Daily Life Report can be downloaded from the marketing resources section on the CJ Logistics website.
