Jinsenoside Bioavailability Study
Published in Swiss Journal, Absorption Increased by 79%
Efforts to Promote Excellence of Domestic and International Heuksam
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-sun] "The absorption rate of ginsenosides in Heuksam (black ginseng) is higher than that in Hong Sam (red ginseng)."
Recently, a paper demonstrating the effect of the 'ginsenoside absorption rate in the body' of Heuksam was published in the internationally renowned Swiss academic journal Pharmaceutics, following the completion of human clinical trials by CJ CheilJedang. Dr. Sung Doyu (47, female), a researcher at CJ CheilJedang Food Research Institute, whom we met at CJ Blossom Park in Suwon City, smiled brightly, saying, "This will be an opportunity to promote the excellence of Heuksam both domestically and internationally." Ginsenosides are a type of saponin found in ginseng and are known as the key functional components among the various active ingredients of ginseng.
Leading the research, Dr. Sung conducted human clinical trials in collaboration with Kyung Hee University College of Medicine and College of Pharmacy to verify the 'effect of increased bioavailability of Heuksam.' The study targeted 14 types of ginsenosides, including Rb1, Rg1, and Rg3, which are effective indicators of Hong Sam. Blood samples were collected from subjects at regular intervals for 48 hours before and after consuming Hong Sam and Heuksam to measure and analyze the concentration of ginsenosides.
Dr. Sung explained, "When consuming Heuksam, the amount of ginsenoside absorption increased by 79% compared to Hong Sam, and the absorption speed was 5 hours faster." She added, "Through the 'Gujeung Gupo' process, which involves steaming and drying the ginseng nine times, the ginsenoside structures in Heuksam are broken down into smaller molecules, positively influencing enhanced absorption in the human body."
After earning her Ph.D. in the United States in 2004, Dr. Sung researched whether health foods could alleviate bone, joint, and muscle diseases caused by aging. She joined CJ CheilJedang in 2017 and has continued research related to health foods. Dr. Sung stated, "We are researching scientific evidence that allows Heuksam to appeal to consumers in the Hong Sam market."

CJ CheilJedang was the first in the industry to launch health functional foods and health beverages using 'Gujeung Gupo Heuksam' in 2012. The company is focusing on researching scientific evidence to expand the Heuksam market. In 2019, a research paper proving the immune-enhancing functionality of Heuksam was published in the prestigious international nutrition journal Nutrients. Dr. Sung said, "Following animal studies that demonstrated Heuksam's superior immune-enhancing effects compared to Hong Sam, we have now verified that its absorption rate is also increased." She added, "We will continue various studies on the efficacy of Heuksam and publish the results in authoritative international journals. We will strive to promote the excellence of Heuksam not only to domestic consumers but also worldwide."
