View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Manguri Park in Jungnang-gu (District Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) is establishing itself as a representative historical and cultural park in Seoul.
This place, called Mangwoo (忘憂), meaning "now I can forget my worries," was named by King Taejo Yi Seong-gye after setting his tomb following his death. From 1933 to 1973, it was a communal cemetery with tens of thousands of graves over 40 years.
More than 50 years later, Manguri Park has been reborn as a space imbued with humanistic value, where visitors can enjoy dense forests, scenic walking trails, and meet figures who led Korea's modern and contemporary history.
It is significant that about 60 pioneers who led Korea's modern and contemporary history, including patriots Han Yong-un, Oh Se-chang, Moon Il-pyung, Bang Jeong-hwan, Jo Bong-am, as well as Ji Seok-young, Lee Jung-seop, and Park In-hwan, rest together in one place.
Moreover, it is almost impossible to discuss Korea's modern and contemporary history without mentioning those who are peacefully resting in Manguri Park.
Now, Manguri Park has completely shed its past image as a communal cemetery and has been reborn as a local attraction?a healing space to stroll along the lush ‘Path of Contemplation’ and a living classroom of history.
The ‘Jungnang Mangwoo Space,’ a key facility for creating a historical and cultural park, began construction on April 27 and will open within the year to welcome residents.
The facility will be a two-story building with a total floor area of 1,247㎡ (377 pyeong), featuring amenities such as a caf?, restrooms, and parking lot, as well as an observatory, promotional and exhibition halls, and classrooms to be used as a historical and cultural education venue.
Once Jungnang Mangwoo Space is completed, many residents visiting Manguri Park will be able to enjoy the park comfortably and pleasantly, and interest in the numerous historical figures resting there is expected to increase.
