She will no longer be able to prepare side dishes and bring them to her younger sibling’s nearby home.
The horrific incident that occurred on the 20th in Busan between two friends in their 50s (male) (reported in our April 21 online edition) brutally crushed many people struggling through harsh lives alone.
That night in a multi-family residential area in Bujeon-dong, Busanjin-gu, Busan, forced the residents living under one roof to endure the time they most wanted to erase.
Before midnight, a man in his 50s renting on the first floor was stabbed multiple times with a weapon by a friend with whom he had been drinking and arguing, and died. The friend who dropped the weapon also set fire to the house.
The fire demon quickly engulfed the four-story multi-family house. A woman in her 60s living alone on the third floor could not escape the suffocating black smoke and the blazing red flames.
To survive, she threw herself out of the third-floor window and suffered a severe head injury. From that moment, a time she cannot remember began. After about three days, her memory entered a time that will never return.
Neighbors who remembered that she lived for the joy of making side dishes and bringing them to her younger sibling’s nearby home will no longer see that joy.
On the day of the incident, a woman in her 70s (the building owner) living alone on the fourth floor and a tenant on the second floor lost consciousness due to inhaling smoke while escaping and were transported to the hospital.
The woman in her 70s is still receiving inpatient treatment. She had lost her husband several years ago and was spending her lonely old age alone.
The man in his 50s suspected of killing an acquaintance while intoxicated and committing arson was also injured and was urgently arrested at the scene and is receiving treatment. The police will detain him once the investigation is complete.
A local resident, Mr. Kim (in his 50s), said that all the residents living under one roof in the four-story multi-family house where the murder and arson occurred were elderly people in their 60s and 70s living alone in each unit.
