The resolution rally was held in compliance with COVID-19 quarantine rules, and attendees including Governor Kim San, officials from Mokpo Fisheries Cooperative, and fishermen condemned the Japanese government's irresponsible decision and pledged to protect the sea from radioactive contaminated water.
A fisherman who participated in the rally said, "I have been engaged in fishing in the sea for a long time, but I am worried that the decision to discharge Fukushima radioactive contaminated water will reduce the consumption of seafood such as octopus and fish, leading to the decline of fishing villages," adding, "I hope the government will firmly respond to the Japanese government so that fishermen can feel secure."
Park Cheon-gyu, President of the Muan County Fisheries Management Association, emphasized in the resolution statement, "If contaminated water is discharged into the sea, seafood containing radioactive substances such as tritium and cesium will end up on the tables of our citizens and people around the world," and "The Japanese government must immediately withdraw the decision to discharge radioactive contaminated water into the ocean, which threatens the survival of fishermen and human life."
Additionally, Lee Wan-beom, President of the Mokpo Fisheries Cooperative Federation of Fishing Villages, stated that they will fight to the end against the Japanese government, which is deceiving South Korea and the world and attempting a nuclear terror act by discharging radioactive contaminated water, until the decision is withdrawn.
Governor Kim San of Muan County said, "If radioactive contaminated water is discharged, it will cause serious pollution not only to the Korean Peninsula but also to the world's oceans, which will ultimately be a disaster for all humanity," and added, "If the marine ecosystem is destroyed due to this wrong decision, it will be irreversible, so the Japanese government must transparently disclose all information related to radioactive contaminated water."
