Russian Military Concentrates Troops Near Ukraine Border... 'Tensions Rise'
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] Russia is amassing troops along the border with Ukraine, escalating tensions in the region. Amid clashes between pro-Russian separatist rebels and Ukrainian government forces in the Donbas area of Ukraine, concerns are growing that the Russian military buildup could lead to a military invasion similar to the 2014 Crimea crisis.
On the 20th (local time), The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) released satellite images showing Russian Su-30 fighter jets deployed on a runway in Crimea. Fighter jets, which were not present as recently as last month, have been increasingly spotted in other locations as well. BBC and other broadcasters also reported that, in addition to Black Sea Fleet warships stationed in Crimea, landing ships from the Northern Baltic Fleet and Northern Fleet have been confirmed entering the area.
Regarding the troop buildup, Russia has explained it as part of regular military exercises. However, the scale of forces deployed in the Ukraine area already exceeds that of the 2014 Crimea crisis, heightening tensions in the region.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba expressed concern, stating, "Within a week, Russian forces will reach 120,000 troops," and added, "They may not stop reinforcing their troops at this level."
In the Donbas region of Ukraine, military attacks continue not only by pro-Russian rebels but also by forces presumed to be regular Russian troops. This area, whose residents have pro-Russian leanings, declared independence from Ukraine when Russia abruptly annexed Crimea in 2014. Since then, clashes between Ukrainian regular forces and separatists have continued.

However, experts have also analyzed that the current military buildup serves as a political and military show of force directed at Ukraine and the West. Military expert Aleksandr Golts stated, "Russia's actions should not be interpreted as preparation for an invasion of Ukraine," adding, "Although Russian warships, including landing ships, have gathered in the Black Sea, this force is insufficient to conduct an amphibious operation to establish a foothold on the Ukrainian coast."
