[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Sumi] In December last year, an incident occurred at a private emergency rescue team in Gimhae, Gyeongnam, where the rescue team leader Mr. A (43) assaulted a subordinate in his 40s and left him unattended overnight, resulting in his death. It has now been revealed that all three accomplices known to be involved in this case claimed that they themselves were victims.
According to a JTBC report on the 18th, the accomplices who assisted Mr. A in his crime insisted that they were victims, not perpetrators. These three individuals are Mr. A’s wife and the head of the rescue team, Ms. B, the rescue team’s chief, Mr. C, and an acquaintance, Mr. D.
Shortly after the incident, they reportedly visited the press with their lawyer and stated that not only the deceased victim but also themselves were slaves to Mr. A. They said they had been subjected to constant threats and coercion by Mr. A, suffered habitual assault, but could not report it due to threats to kill their families.
They also said that if they did not comply with Mr. A’s actions, they themselves would be beaten, and thus they could not stop Mr. A’s violence. They apologized to the victim while crying and expressed deep remorse.
However, the rescue team employees claimed that these individuals were lying. They argued that Ms. B and Mr. C were of the same kind as Mr. A and refuted that it was unacceptable to inflict or tolerate pain on others to avoid their own suffering.
The Gimhae Western Police Station announced on the 16th that the three accomplices were sent to the prosecution on charges including aiding and abetting murder. Ms. B and Mr. C were also charged with habitual extortion and assault. However, unlike Mr. A, who was arrested first, the three accomplices are currently not in custody. The police stated that they had applied for an arrest warrant once, but it was dismissed at the prosecution stage due to lack of evidence and the need to supplement charges.
In response, the bereaved families and colleagues expressed their incomprehension and regret over the initial investigation. It is known that the police conducted a search of the scene 11 days after the incident occurred. Additionally, Mr. A was initially charged with 'injury resulting in death' rather than 'murder.'
