Minister of Science and ICT Visits Samsung Electronics Suwon: "We Must Create a Virtuous Cycle Ecosystem for 5G"
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] On the 13th, Choi Ki-young, Minister of Science and ICT, visited Samsung Electronics' Suwon plant to check the progress of 5G module and terminal development and held a time for on-site communication. This event was to accelerate the activation of 5G convergence services linked to the Digital New Deal on the occasion of the 2nd anniversary of 5G commercialization.
According to the Ministry of Science and ICT, Minister Choi toured a production line at Samsung Electronics' Suwon factory that automates processes based on 5G to manufacture high-quality communication equipment. He then attended a performance verification site between 28GHz band equipment and terminals to encourage the efforts of developers.
Minister Choi stated, "The activation of 5G convergence services is a nationwide project to lead the 4th Industrial Revolution era amid the uncertainties caused by COVID-19," and added, "To create 5G achievements that the public can feel early in the overall economy and society, we will establish continuous communication and cooperation channels with the industry and actively resolve difficulties in the industrial field."
At the subsequent industry meeting, he reviewed and shared government policy directions to revitalize the terminal industry ecosystem in line with the start of the 5G module and terminal localization project, and discussed listening to difficulties in the industrial field and development plans.
This project aims to develop 5G modules and terminals using domestic technology centered on a consortium of small and medium-sized enterprises to replace expensive foreign modules and terminals. The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to complete the development and certification of the 3.5GHz communication module within the year and provide the developed results for use by other companies so that various SMEs can participate in the 5G terminal market. Furthermore, it will support the entire cycle from technology development (chip and terminal localization, future edge device development) → infrastructure support (establishment of digital open labs and support for testing and certification) → market creation (expansion of public leading investment, support for overseas expansion).
The government judges that to overcome the economic crisis caused by COVID-19 and lead the 4th Industrial Revolution, it is necessary to create a virtuous 5G ecosystem linking equipment, network, and services. To support this, it is urgent to create a cooperative platform between demand and supply companies related to 5G equipment and terminal development, as well as to activate B2B services using various terminals in the 28GHz band.
Large and small-medium enterprises attending the meeting, including Samsung Electronics, AM Solutions, CleverLogic, and Patron, agreed to cooperate in developing competitively priced 5G modules and terminals and participate in policy consultative bodies to activate B2B services, playing an active role in the early spread of 5G convergence services.
