[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Choyoung] On the 12th, Jeong Cheong-rae, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, emphasized that the Democratic Party must accelerate reforms by comparing the early voting candidate vote share in his constituency, Mapo-gu Eul, Seoul, with the vote share in the last general election.
In a post titled "Analyzing the Early Voting Rate in Mapo (Eul) Constituency..." on his Facebook on the same day, Jeong said, "Park Young-sun won the early vote by 5%, but overall, Park Young-sun lost by 8.46%," adding, "Assuming that early voting reflects active supporters voting actively, this indicates a public sentiment demanding more vigorous reforms."
He continued, "Reforms such as prosecution, media law, and livelihood reforms are like bicycle pedals; if you stop, you fall and cannot move forward," and added, "We were given 180 seats, so what are we doing now? I think we must respond actively to this. Reform faster with speed!"
Following the crushing defeat in the by-elections, some first-term Democratic Party lawmakers have called for party renewal, citing issues like the 'Cho Kuk incident.' On the 9th, Jeong questioned, "If Cho Kuk and prosecution reform were the problems, how could we have won the general election?" and voiced, "We must not forget the candlelight spirit of Seocho-dong."
