View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Juhee] A driver who caused a fatal accident after failing to notice a grandmother jaywalking has released footage of the incident on YouTube. The driver, Mr. A, stated the reason for sharing the video was "to prevent other drivers from suffering the same injustice as I did."
Traffic accident expert Lawyer Han Mooncheol uploaded a video titled "A grandmother running across the street jaywalking collided with a truck and passed away. I hope my video will help prevent other drivers from facing similar injustices" on his YouTube channel 'Han Mooncheol TV' on the 10th.
In the video, Mr. A expressed his sorrow over the grandmother's death, saying, "My negligence for not being more cautious played a big part." However, he also voiced his frustration, explaining that he could not avoid the pedestrian jaywalking in the early dawn hours.
The accident occurred around 4 a.m. on January 10 last year on a six-lane road with a speed limit of 60 km/h. At the time, Mr. A was driving a truck slightly above 60 km/h, and a taxi was driving slightly ahead in the right lane of the truck.
The taxi stopped abruptly when someone suddenly ran onto the crosswalk, but the truck continued driving and collided with the pedestrian who was running. The grandmother was transported to the hospital but ultimately passed away.
Regarding the incident, Mr. A explained, "I turned the steering wheel to the left momentarily, but I did not collide head-on with the grandmother; instead, I hit the passenger door. She was running and wearing dark-colored clothing," describing the situation at the time.
Although the prosecutor claimed Mr. A was at fault for the accident, he was acquitted at the sentencing trial held on the 8th.
In response, Lawyer Han said, "The prosecutor will appeal, and the case is not over yet. We do not know what the outcome of the appeal trial will be." He added, "(Jaywalking) is a tragedy for everyone," emphasizing, "The trauma of the truck driver who lost a grandmother in his vehicle will not be forgotten regardless of guilt or degree of fault. Also, the grief of the deceased grandmother’s family is unimaginable."
