[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] It has been revealed that most of the top 100 companies in South Korea by sales are implementing remote work (for office workers). More than half of them responded that they will hire new employees this year at a level similar to last year.
On the 11th, the Korea Employers Federation announced the results of a recent survey on the status of remote work and new hiring plans among the top 100 companies by sales, revealing that 91.5% of the respondent companies are currently implementing remote work.
The 91.5% implementation rate of remote work is 3.1 percentage points higher than last year's survey (88.4%), indicating that many companies have been steadily implementing remote work since the spread of COVID-19.
Companies not currently implementing remote work accounted for 8.5%. Among them, 2.4% had implemented remote work after the spread of COVID-19 but are not currently doing so, and 6.1% have never implemented remote work since the spread of COVID-19. Companies that stopped remote work cited "significant inefficiency in work" as the reason.
The most common method of remote work was "a rotational system including shift scheduling and managing the proportion of employees coming to the office," with 58.7% of responses. Regarding perceived work productivity during remote work, 40.9% evaluated it as "90% or more compared to normal work."
Additionally, to prevent productivity decline among remote workers, 68.7% responded that they manage both attendance and work progress.
Regarding the use and expansion of remote work after the COVID-19 crisis is resolved, 56.4% of companies responded that it will "return to pre-COVID-19 levels," an increase from 33.9% in last year's survey. The response that "remote work will continue to be used and expanded even after the COVID-19 crisis is resolved" was 43.6%, slightly down from 53.2% in last year's survey.
Meanwhile, regarding new hiring plans for this year, 83.6% of respondent companies said they expect hiring to be similar to or increase compared to last year. Specifically, 55.7% said it would be similar to last year, 27.9% said it would increase compared to the previous year, and 16.4% said it would decrease.
