Restrictions on Going Out and Overnight Stays, Errands, and Hair Regulations... Persistent Bad Practices in University Sports Teams
Human Rights Commission Recommends Measures to Regulate and Prevent Violent Control
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] The abusive practices within university sports teams have not been eradicated. Routine controls unrelated to sports, such as restrictions on outings and overnight stays, hair regulations, forced errands, and dating restrictions, remain prevalent.
The National Human Rights Commission announced on the 6th that, based on a survey of nine universities operating large-scale sports teams with over 100 professional athletes and more than 10 sports teams, 4 out of 10 athletes experienced restrictions on outings and overnight stays (38%) and hair and dress regulations (37.2%).
Additionally, 32.2% reported being forced by seniors to run errands, do laundry, and clean. Among university athletes who experienced violent control, 6 out of 10 (62.4%) said they did not understand why such measures were necessary, and 35.7% responded that they wanted to quit sports. Nearly half (46.1%) believed that such controls were unrelated to sports team management, improvement of athletic ability, sports performance, or winning.
The Human Rights Commission stated regarding the survey results, "Treating university students, who should decide their own lives as adults, as objects of management and control," and judged this as "an act that infringes on athletes' rights to self-determination, general freedom of action, and even the right to pursue happiness guaranteed by Article 10 of the Constitution."
