The ‘Gangjin 4·4 Independence Manse Movement’ is a historic event in which local residents, determined to restore the country to their families and descendants during a dark era, overcame fear and shouted “Daehan Independence Manse” to continue the legacy of the March 1st Independence Manse Movement.
The ‘Gangjin 4·4 Independence Manse Movement’ of 1919, 102 years ago, involved all social classes regardless of status, class, gender, or age participating peacefully to regain the country, contributing to regional integration and development. However, this great event nearly disappeared into history until it was rediscovered by Lee Young-sik from Nampo Village, Gangjin-eup, and the Nampo Farming Association.
The Nampo Farming Association confirmed the facts of the 4·4 Gangjin Manse Movement through various data collection and, in 1992, villagers pooled their resources to erect a March 1st Movement monument at the village entrance.
Since 1994, they have held memorial ceremonies, and from 2005, with support from Gangjin-gun and the Gwangju Regional Veterans Affairs Office, the Gangjin Cultural Center has organized annual commemorative events every April 4th to preserve and inherit the important history of the Gangjin area.
