US White House to Meet with Samsung, GM, and Others on the 12th to Discuss Semiconductor Shortage (Comprehensive)
Hosted by Biden's National Security and Economic Advisors
Semiconductor Manufacturers and Medical Equipment Companies Expected to Participate
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Suhwan] President Joe Biden's economic and security advisors are inviting semiconductor-related industries, including Samsung, to discuss measures regarding the ongoing global semiconductor supply shortage.
According to Bloomberg on the 1st (local time), Jake Sullivan, National Security Advisor, and Brian Deese, Director of the National Economic Council, will invite representatives from semiconductor and automobile manufacturers to the White House to discuss solutions to the semiconductor supply shortage. Among the invitees are Samsung Electronics, the U.S. foundry company GlobalFoundries, and the American automobile manufacturer GM. The meeting is scheduled to take place on the 12th.
Bloomberg reported, "According to sources, in addition to these companies, other automobile manufacturers, semiconductor producers, and medical equipment companies are also expected to be invited." This is interpreted as an intention to invite all related industries directly or indirectly affected by the semiconductor shortage to listen to various stakeholders' opinions and derive comprehensive measures to resolve the supply shortage.
Previously, as global automobile demand surged, orders for vehicle semiconductors increased, causing supply bottlenecks at semiconductor foundry companies. This has adversely affected automobile manufacturers' production volumes, prolonging the semiconductor shortage.
President Biden is reportedly considering measures such as providing incentives to U.S. semiconductor companies like Intel to resolve the supply shortage and encourage domestic semiconductor production. Earlier, Intel announced plans to invest $20 billion (approximately 23 trillion KRW) to build two semiconductor factories in the U.S. and to enter the foundry sector.
