[Asia Economy Reporter Minyoung Cha] UT LLC, a joint venture between ride-sharing company Uber and Tmap Mobility, a subsidiary of SK Telecom, officially launched on the 1st. Attention is focused on whether it can become a game changer in the domestic taxi-sharing platform market, where Kakao Mobility's 'KakaoT' service dominates.
According to industry sources on the 1st, Tom White, Uber Korea's head, has been appointed as the CEO of UT. White is recognized as a figure who has led Uber's global growth by overseeing operations in Australia, Japan, and Korea.
UT plans to introduce a new type of service and brand that integrates the existing 'Uber Taxi' and 'Tmap Taxi' services as early as this summer. Tmap Mobility stated, "The official service name and launch date have not been decided yet," adding, "Until the integrated service is launched, Uber and Tmap Mobility's services will continue as they are."
The newly established corporation UT is expected to develop an innovative taxi-hailing business that enhances consumer convenience by combining Tmap Taxi drivers, map and vehicle traffic analysis technology, and Uber's global operational experience and platform technology.
