Effective for Rallying Supporters but Insufficient for Capturing Swing Voters
Park Young-sun and Oh Se-hoon First TV Debate
"Only Confirmed Hostility Toward Opponent" "Appeared Overly Eager"
Both Candidates Received Only 1 Out of 7 Votes in Competency Evaluation
[Asia Economy Reporters Naju-seok, Park Joon-yi] In the first TV debate between Park Young-sun, the Democratic Party candidate, and Oh Se-hoon, the People Power Party candidate, running in the April 7 Seoul mayoral by-election, experts declared a 'draw,' stating that neither side was able to dominate the other. Political experts who watched the debate analyzed that it proceeded in a way that consolidated only the supporters rather than swaying undecided voters.
On the 30th, seven political experts who watched the previous day's MBC broadcast '100-Minute Debate' gave an overall assessment of a 3-3 draw. In terms of vision, candidate Park received 2 votes, surpassing candidate Oh who received 1 vote, but in debate skills, candidate Oh received 3 votes, earning a better evaluation than candidate Park who received 2 votes. Regarding capability, both candidates received only 1 vote each, indicating a poor evaluation.
The overall debate was assessed as neither candidate overwhelming the other. Jang Sung-chul, director of the Gonggam and Debate Policy Center, said, "It was a session that only confirmed hostility toward the opponent," adding, "Both showed excessive enthusiasm." Yoon Tae-gon, head of the political analysis office at The Moa, said, "Each appealed only to their own supporters, and no one dominated the other," adding, "It seems insufficient to change the minds of those uninterested in politics or undecided after watching this debate."
Candidate Park was well evaluated for presenting a vision. Park Sang-byeong, invited professor at Inha University Graduate School of Policy, commented, "Candidate Park showed the possibility of trying something new, whereas candidate Oh gave the impression of focusing on redevelopment and reconstruction." Eom Kyung-young, director of the Era Spirit Research Institute, also evaluated, "Candidate Park showed a future-oriented image, while candidate Oh was negligent in presenting a vision."
"Showed a future-oriented image" Vision presentation gave Park the edge
"More confident than at the declaration of candidacy" Oh had better debate skills
In debate skills, candidate Oh received relatively favorable reviews. Ahn Il-won, CEO of Research View, said, "Interceptions that cut off the opponent’s flow may be annoying to viewers, but from the perspective of the leading side, it can be seen as a good defense," adding, "Candidate Park showed signs of nervousness, such as exceeding the time limit in the opening remarks." Political commentator Lee Jong-hoon said, "Candidate Oh’s attitude has changed a lot compared to when he declared his candidacy," giving the impression of "having gained a lot of confidence."

There was also an impressive evaluation that the roles of the ruling and opposition candidates were reversed. Park Sang-chul, dean of the Graduate School of Political Studies at Kyonggi University, said, "Usually, the opposition party takes the offensive role and the ruling party defends, but this debate showed the opposite pattern." Dean Park evaluated, "Candidate Park found the attack points of candidate Oh well," while "candidate Oh showed confidence in his administrative capabilities." Meanwhile, there was criticism that Jeong Jun-hee, adjunct professor at Hanyang University who moderated the debate, did not show fairness. Director Jang said, "Professor Jeong pointed out twice during the broadcast that candidate Oh used more panels than previously agreed, while advising candidate Park regarding the lead in the debate," adding, "It raised doubts about whether it was fair."
