Maeil Dairies Launches 'Golden Milk' Powder Product for Bone Health
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-sun] Maeil Dairies launched a powdered product for adult bone health called 'Gol(deun Milk)' on the 29th.
Gol(deun Milk) is a bone health specialized product jointly developed by Maeil Dairies and the Korean Society for Bone and Mineral Research. It is characterized by providing 100% of the daily recommended intake of calcium and vitamin D with two cups a day (one cup is 125ml). In addition, it contains 100% of the daily recommended intake of zinc, which helps normal immunity, and vitamin B1 and niacin, which are necessary for energy production.
According to the 2019 National Health and Nutrition Survey, 7 out of 10 Koreans consume less calcium than needed. Especially for adult women in their 50s and 60s, an average daily intake of 800mg of calcium is required, but the actual average intake is only 456.3mg. In adult women, insufficient calcium intake greatly increases the prevalence of osteopenia. Currently, 50% of Koreans aged 50 and older experience osteopenia.
According to the Korean Society for Bone and Mineral Research, calcium should be consumed through food rather than supplements to avoid side effects. Excessive calcium intake can cause side effects such as urinary stones and hypercalcemia.
On the other hand, milk, a representative calcium supplement food, tends to be consumed less as people age. Elderly people aged 65 and over consume only about 40g of milk per day on average due to digestive burden. The reason for the digestive burden of dairy products is the lack of lactase, an enzyme that breaks down lactose, in the body. It is known that 1 in 2 Koreans experience lactose intolerance. In such cases, symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, and diarrhea occur after drinking milk.
Gol(deun Milk) uses lactose-free milk powder with 0% lactose to improve these inconveniences. Maeil Dairies exclusively sources lactose-free milk powder from Valio, a Finnish company that developed lactose-free milk for the first time in the world.
