Installation of AI Unmanned Collection Machine 'Nephron' No. 4 at Gangdong-gu Community Center
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Gangdong-gu (District Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) is installing and operating the 4th Circulating Resource Collection Robot (Nephron) in front of the main entrance of the Gangdong-gu Community Center to establish a smart recycling collection system.
The AI can and PET bottle unmanned collection machine (Nephron) is a vending machine-type resource circulation robot that applies artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) technology. When cans or PET bottles are inserted into the input slot, AI sensors automatically classify and compress the cans and PET bottles for collection.
As a reward for collection, 10 points are accumulated per can or PET bottle, and up to 200 items can be inserted per person per day.
When the accumulated points exceed 2,000, they can be transferred to a personal account through the Superbin website or Superbin app and used as cash.
Previously, Gangdong-gu started a pilot operation of Nephron No. 1 at Seongil Elementary School, and installed and operated Nephron No. 2 at Saemteo Neighborhood Park and Nephron No. 3 at Amsa-dong Historic Site.
As of February 2021, the cumulative number of users reached about 5,100, and the accumulated points exceeded 2.2 million won. More than 300,000 cans and PET bottles were recycled, contributing to resource circulation.
Accordingly, the district installed Nephron No. 4 at the Gangdong-gu Community Center to further improve awareness of resource circulation.

Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, said, “Although the Gangdong-gu Community Center is currently closed due to COVID-19, local residents can use it, and many residents, including visitors to the community center, are expected to use Nephron in the future.” He added, “We will continue to do our best to raise awareness of the importance of resource circulation and encourage participation.”
