Naver: "Service Error on the 24th Caused by DDoS Attack"
Ministry of Science and ICT to Conduct Survey with Korea Internet & Security Agency
[Asia Economy Reporter Bu Aeri] It has been confirmed that the cause of the outage on NAVER on the 24th was a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack.
On the 25th, NAVER stated, "After defending against an external DDoS attack, a service access error occurred during the process of rebooting the network switch equipment," and added, "We plan to investigate together with the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Internet & Security Agency." The company also plans to expand response equipment and work with the government to establish countermeasures. DDoS is a cyberattack method that uses zombie PCs infected with malware inserted for distributed denial of service attacks to simultaneously send access requests to the target computer at a specific time, thereby paralyzing the system.
Earlier, some service pages such as NAVER News, Blogs, and Cafes experienced access errors for about 40 minutes starting from 5:26 PM the previous day.
