The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Seoul Metropolitan Government, and Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) announced on the 24th that they signed a business agreement for the 'Solar Railroad Green New Deal Cooperation Project' at Seoul City Hall, which involves installing solar power facilities using railroad infrastructure.
The signing ceremony was attended by Son Myung-soo, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Seo Jeong-hyeop, Acting Mayor of Seoul, and Son Byung-seok, President of KORAIL.
Through this agreement, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and others will jointly promote the installation of solar power facilities totaling 25MW, including 19.8MW at railroad vehicle depots and station parking lots, and 5.2MW of solar landmarks at railroad stations such as Seoul Station by the end of 2022.
It is expected to produce 32 million kWh of electricity annually, enough to power 10,000 households, achieving a carbon reduction effect equivalent to planting 2.2 million pine trees every year.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and KORAIL plan to continuously expand cooperation systems with various organizations starting with this project, aiming to increase the scale of solar power generation in the railroad sector to 456MW by 2030.
