Chosun University Hospital Thoracic Surgery Department Successfully Performs Aortic Surgery on 90-Year-Old Elderly Patient
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Gwan-woo] Chosun University Hospital announced on the 22nd that the thoracic surgery team led by Professor Jeong Jae-han recently succeeded in performing an aortic artificial vascular replacement surgery, removing a ruptured aorta and replacing it with an artificial blood vessel, on a 90-year-old elderly patient.
The patient, Mr. A, suddenly collapsed around 3 p.m. on December 29 last year and was immediately transferred to a nearby hospital. However, due to signs of aortic rupture, he was promptly transferred to Chosun University Hospital for surgical treatment.
Mr. A was diagnosed with acute aortic dissection, a very dangerous condition where the mortality rate increases by 2% every hour without appropriate treatment.
Professor Jeong judged that since there was a large amount of blood accumulated in the pleural cavity partially compressing the heart, the patient was at high risk of death if left untreated. He recommended surgery to the guardian, who decided to proceed with the operation.
Professor Jeong’s surgical team opened the patient’s chest, removed the ruptured ascending aorta, and performed ascending aortic replacement and aortic arch replacement using an artificial blood vessel.
Mr. A was discharged without major complications after the surgery and is reported to be living healthily as of today.
During a recent follow-up visit to the thoracic surgery department, Mr. A said, “I am very grateful to Professor Jeong Jae-han of the thoracic surgery department for performing the surgery well despite my advanced age. I will never forget it.”
