Jungnang-gu Myeonmok Yusuji to Create Seoul's First Outdoor Garden in a District
Selected for Korea Forest Service Public Project... Received 500 Million KRW in National Funding to Create the First Outdoor Garden in Autonomous District at Myeonmok Yusuji Rest Area... Skilled Garden Artists Selected to Develop a High-Quality Living Garden... Presenting a New Type of Garden
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] An outdoor garden will be established for the first time among Seoul's autonomous districts at the Myeonmok Yusuji Rest Area in Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Gyeong-gi).
The creation of this outdoor garden was finalized after Jungnang-gu was selected for the “Life-closely Forest (Garden) Creation” contest, part of the Korea Forest Service's Green New Deal project.
The project budget of 500 million KRW is fully funded by the national government, and the project is being promoted with a goal of completion by September.
Under mutual cooperation with the Korea Forest Service and the Korea National Arboretum, the outdoor garden will reduce various pollutants such as fine dust and provide residents with a comfortable resting space. It is expected to play a significant role in establishing a lifestyle garden culture within the urban environment.
The Myeonmok Yusuji outdoor garden will be directly created by the Korea National Arboretum, an affiliate of the Korea Forest Service. Under the direction of professional garden artists, artificial facilities will be avoided, and a nature-friendly design differentiated from existing parks will be applied to create a diverse and distinctive lifestyle garden.
The target site, Myeonmok Yusuji Rest Area, is closely connected to a large residential complex and has excellent accessibility due to its proximity to Saja-jeong Station on Subway Line 7. When the Myeonmok Yusuji Culture and Sports Complex Center, scheduled for completion in 2024, is established, it will harmonize with the outdoor garden to become a nature-friendly cultural space loved by many residents.
Ryu Gyeong-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, “I hope the Myeonmok Yusuji Rest Area being created this time will become a place that comforts the tired bodies and minds of residents,” and added, “We will continue to expand various lifestyle garden infrastructures that can heal the mind and body to realize green welfare for residents.”

Last November, the district created the “Designated Protected Tree Pavilion Yard” in Yangji Village Yard, where Jungnang-gu’s only protected tree is located. Together with a zelkova tree approximately 190 years old, which has been loved by residents, 14 species and 2,150 trees including crape myrtle (Baegilhong) were planted, and facilities such as a pavilion, pergola, benches, playground equipment, and exercise machines were installed, making it a popular urban spot in Jungnang-gu that provides rest from the tiring daily life.
