Josangho "An Important Moment for the Role of the National Council of Metropolitan Council Representatives"
Seoul Metropolitan Council Democratic Party Holds Meeting with National Metropolitan Council Democratic Party Representatives' Council
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] The Democratic Party of Korea in the Seoul Metropolitan Council (Representative Assemblymen Jo Sang-ho, Seodaemun 4) held a meeting at 2 p.m. on the 18th in the Democratic Party representative office of the Seoul Metropolitan Council to discuss major issues ahead of the launch of the ‘National Metropolitan Council Democratic Party Representatives’ Council’ in April.
According to Article 114 of the party constitution, the Democratic Party of Korea is organizing a council of metropolitan council members within the party to promote local autonomy and decentralization and strengthen policy consultations.
Accordingly, the council of metropolitan council members is a consultative body of Democratic Party-affiliated metropolitan council members nationwide, seeking ways to realize key policies of Democratic Party metropolitan council members across the country and forming a network to revitalize local autonomy.
Representative Assemblyman Jo Sang-ho said, “I would like to express my gratitude to the representative assemblymen who came from all 17 cities and provinces nationwide, from as far as Jeju Island. Thanks to the active activities of the National Metropolitan Council members, we achieved the revision of the Local Autonomy Act at the end of last year, which mainly includes the autonomy of legislative authority and independence of personnel authority for local councils. At this critical time, when follow-up measures and the enactment of the Local Council Act are underway, the role of the National Metropolitan Council Representatives’ Council is more important than ever, and we must communicate frequently and speak with one voice.”
He also urged, “In light of the recent LH incident, which has caused extreme disappointment and anger among the public, we must promptly observe what the people want, and the nationwide metropolitan councils must take the lead in restoring the public nature of public officials and public institutions and regaining the trust of the people. Please continue to make efforts in this regard.”
This meeting was the second session following the one held in February at the Gyeonggi Provincial Council (Representative Assemblyman Park Geun-cheol), where heated discussions continued on the upcoming launch ceremony and organizational structure, the local council expo, and the future direction of negotiation groups for local decentralization.
About 20 assemblymen attended the meeting, including the Democratic Party delegation of the Seoul Metropolitan Council, Gyeonggi Provincial Council Floor Leader Park Geun-cheol, Incheon Metropolitan Council Floor Leader Kim Jong-in, Ulsan Metropolitan Council Floor Leader Baek Woon-chan, Gangwon Provincial Council Floor Leader Heo So-young, Jeollabuk-do Provincial Council Floor Leader Sung Kyung-chan, Jeollanam-do Provincial Council Floor Leader Lee Jang-seok, and Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Council Floor Leader Kim Hee-hyun.
