'Surgery Completed' Lee Jae-yong, Emergency Transfer from Pyeongchon Hospital to Samsung Hospital at Midnight (Update)
Recovering After Emergency Surgery for Appendicitis
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] Lee Jae-yong, Vice Chairman of Samsung Electronics, who is detained at Seoul Detention Center, underwent emergency surgery at Samsung Seoul Hospital on the 19th due to a ruptured appendix and is currently recovering.
According to the Ministry of Justice and medical sources on the 20th, Lee was transferred to Samsung Seoul Hospital the previous evening due to appendicitis and underwent emergency surgery around midnight. Appendicitis, better known as inflammation of the appendix, refers to inflammation occurring in the appendix at the end of the cecum. It causes severe pain in the right side of the abdomen, and if the appendix ruptures, foreign substances can spread to the peritoneum, potentially leading to peritonitis.
According to a compilation of reports by this outlet, Lee initially felt abdominal pain from the afternoon of the previous day and underwent basic examinations at the detention center. At that time, it was judged to be simple abdominal pain, and despite recommendations from the detention center, he reportedly endured it without going to the hospital. This is interpreted as being conscious of public attention or misunderstandings arising from external medical treatment.
However, around 9 p.m., the pain worsened significantly, and he was transferred to Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital in Pyeongchon, Gyeonggi Province, a hospital designated by the Ministry of Justice near the detention center. Medical staff there confirmed that the appendix had already ruptured and foreign substances had spread to the peritoneum, judged Lee’s condition to be serious, and decided to transfer him again to Samsung Seoul Hospital. Lee has completed surgery and is currently resting in the recovery room, with no schedule set for the future.
