Hampyeong County and Korea Fisheries Resources Agency Sign Business Agreement for Octopus Spawning and Habitat Development Project
Business Promotion Until 2025... Expectation of Increasing High Value-Added Nakji Resources
[Hampyeong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Jeollanam-do Hampyeong-gun and the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency announced on the 18th that they signed a business management consignment agreement on the 17th regarding the ‘Hampyeong-gun Octopus Spawning and Habitat Creation Project’ and have begun full-scale project implementation.
This agreement was promoted following Hampyeong-gun’s selection in December last year for the 2021 Fisheries Resources Spawning and Habitat Creation Project contest hosted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
Starting with this business agreement, the county and the agency will carry out activities such as securing optimal spawning sites for broodstock octopus, creating octopus spawning grounds, removing sedimented waste, transplanting octopus resources, transplanting prey organisms, autonomous fishery management, and effectiveness surveys over five years until 2025 in the Hampyeong Bay area (42ha). To this end, a total project budget of 4 billion KRW, including 2 billion KRW in national funds, will be invested annually.
County Governor Lee Sang-ik said, “Through this agreement, we will strive to create spawning and habitat grounds for octopus, a high-income species that is declining due to climate change and overfishing, thereby enhancing octopus resources, increasing fishermen’s income, and revitalizing the fishing village economy.”
